Dr Martin Hall

Following his PhD studies on blowfly behaviour at Imperial College, Martin spent several years working on tsetse flies in Africa. He joined the Natural History Museum, in London, in 1989, and is presently Head of Research in its Department of Entomology, working in the fields of forensic and veterinary forensic entomology. These two fields of study are linked by fly species that can develop as larvae both on carrion and on live animals in which they cause the disease known as myiasis. Studies of myiasis have taken Martin worldwide, but his work on forensic entomology is mainly UK-based. He has worked on more than 100 criminal cases with many UK Police Forces and his research objective is to improve our knowledge of the blowflies of primary forensic importance, to aid in interpreting the evidence they provide. The photographs show two sides of Martin’s work with insects: one taking samples at a scene of crime; the other catching flies in Greece.
